Lost in the Web3 Woods? Learn the Language, Find the Path
The words we use shape the way we see the world — and in Web3, they can also shape your financial future.

If you’ve ever opened up Twitter, stumbled into a crypto Discord, or tried to read an article about Ethereum, you’ve probably felt that specific brand of digital whiplash. It’s not just the tech — it’s the language and the memes.
Everyone’s tossing around acronyms and slang, GIF memes act like glitching distractions, and you’re left Googling WAGMI while trying to remember if “staking” is something you do to your money or with it. You then learn that WAGMI is not a type of beef or Japanese food of any kind.
It’s okay. You’re not behind — you’re just early.
Every major technological shift brings its own vocabulary. If you tried explaining “uploading a reel to your story” to someone in 1999, they’d think you were speaking nonsense. Web3 is no different. But here’s the thing: once you get the language down, the world gets a lot less intimidating — and a lot more exciting.
Think of it like taking a trip to an amazing foreign destination and after some serious Duolingo practice you can now speak the language and your trip is going to be epic as a result.
Web3 isn’t just about crypto or NFTs or DeFi. It’s about access. It’s about participation. And language is your key.
The Jargon Isn’t the Point — But It’s Also the Point
Some of the terms we use in Web3 are technical by necessity — like private key or smart contract. Others are part of the culture — like gm or degen. You don’t need to become fluent overnight, but learning the basics can help you spot what matters.
For example:
Understanding what a wallet does lets you sign in to apps, buy digital assets, and own your digital identity.
Knowing what staking is can help you earn passive income — but also avoid unnecessary risk.
Recognizing an airdrop opportunity could lead to real money or rewards — just by showing up early.
But I Don’t Want to Sound Like a Nerd…(you might be saying)
Good news: you don’t have to. This isn't about impressing your friends or passing a pop quiz on crypto slang. It’s about feeling comfortable enough to participate. The more familiar the words become, the less intimidating the space feels — and the more agency you have in a world that’s actively being built.
And if you’re ever confused by a term? Ask. Bookmark our glossary. Hit reply and we’ll help. Nobody gets fluent in a new language without practice — and nobody in Web3 knows everything.
My Own Crash Course
When I first stepped into this space, I frequently felt overwhelmed by the culture. I was constantly pausing to look things up. Even as someone who has become more comfortable with tech, it felt like there was always some new acronym or phrase I hadn’t seen before. But over time, I realized that these terms aren’t there to confuse you — they’re there to name new ideas, things we didn’t have language for before: financial autonomy, digital ownership, programmable trust.
Sure, there was also the “crypto bro” jargon where people try to impress others by looking like a culture rebel. Ignore them and their lingo, it is not as meaningful as they try to make it seem.
Once the words start to click, some core concepts begin to take hold, you will see the opportunities start to multiply.
TL;DR: Learn the Lingo, Unlock the Future
If you take away one thing this week, let it be this: you belong here. Web3 isn’t reserved for coders, traders, or crypto-native insiders. It’s for curious people who want more control over their digital lives.
And that starts with the words. Words that help you navigate. Words that open doors.
If your inner thought bubbles are screaming: “Wait, what about the words? We still don’t know the words!” You’re right, we haven’t covered those yet, but we do have an article in this issue that does!
So GM. You’re gonna make it.
