I Stepped into the Metaverse. It Was Stunning... and Then a Bit Strange.

What I learned from trying the Meta Quest 3 — and why I’m still hopeful.

Of all the intriguing aspects of Web3, I would guess it is the metaverse that drives the most curiosity. I got a Meta Quest 3 in December, also curious to see what all the metaverse buzz was about. And honestly? That very first moment was a bit awe inducing.

You start in this beautifully rendered, interactive world — it genuinely felt like I was standing inside a digital world, something out of the movie Minority Report. There was digital space around me, 360 degrees, and my fingers could move around words and menu options floating in midair in front of me. Suddenly I could see my own digital fingers, but how was I supposed to use them?

The experience was immersive, disorienting in a good way, and sparked a feeling I hadn’t had with tech in a long time: wonder.

But then… I didn’t quite know what to do next.

As I explored further, I found myself a bit confused and a little bored, but mostly overwhelmed. Was I doing it wrong? Was I missing something?

My 11-year-old daughter, by contrast, found her groove instantly — attending a virtual Sabrina Carpenter concert, laughing at interactive games, diving into metaverse experiences with ease. Maybe this is a generational thing, I thought. Or maybe I just needed a little more guidance — something to bridge that initial excitement with real, ongoing value.

I haven’t bought any apps yet. I haven’t fully explored. But what I’ve learned is this: the metaverse isn’t plug-and-play magic — it’s more like a new city. You can land in it, but it takes time, more of that curiosity, and maybe a helpful guidebook to make it feel like home.

That’s something Hashed Out hopes to offer more of in the near future. Not hype, not jargon — just clear, friendly ways to explore this next phase of the internet. Because while it may not be fully built yet, it’s already opening its doors. And I want us all to feel welcome.

We have attached a PDF download that profiles some of the things people are doing in the metaverse and links to many of them. It is a first small sampling we are in the process of expanding on. In the meantime, jump in and explore the new digital great beyond.
