The Most Loving Thing You Can Do Is Leave Instructions
Hey there Hashers!
Most of us do not like thinking about estate planning.
It feels distant, uncomfortable, and easy to postpone. There is always a better time to organize the documents, update the will, list the accounts, talk to the attorney, or have the family conversation no one is eager to start.
But estate planning is not really about paperwork.
At its best, it is about care.
It is about making hard moments a little less confusing for the people we love. It is about leaving behind clarity instead of a scavenger hunt. That has always been true.
What has changed is where so much of our lives now live.
A generation ago, the most important family records were often physical. They lived in filing cabinets, desk drawers and safe-deposit boxes. Today, that is less true.
Bank statements may arrive by email. Bills may be on autopay. Family photos may live in iCloud or Google Photos. Passwords may be stored in a password manager.
That is the strange thing about digital life: it can be everywhere and invisible at the same time.
Your family may know where the car keys are. They may know where the checkbook is. They may know which drawer has the passports. But would they know how to get into your phone? Would they know which email account matters most?
This is where digital estate planning becomes important.
And it is not only for people who own crypto.
The phrase “digital assets” can sound like it belongs to investors, coders, or people who spend their time talking about blockchain. But most of us already have digital assets in the ordinary sense: photos, accounts, files, purchases, subscriptions, rewards points, personal records, creative work, and online identities.
Some of those things may have financial value. Some may have sentimental value.
The point is not to turn every household into a technology project. The point is to recognize that modern life now requires a different kind of map.
This week’s Hashed Out is about what belongs in a digital estate plan. We are not approaching this as lawyers, and this is not legal advice. We are approaching it as a practical guide to the digital layer of modern life: accounts, passwords, photos, subscriptions, online purchases, rewards, social media, wallets, and the instructions your family may one day need.

Feature Story

Most of us think of estate planning as wills, bank accounts, insurance policies, and family documents. But today, much of our lives lives online — in email, cloud photos, subscriptions, password managers, payment apps, digital purchases, and sometimes crypto wallets.
This week’s main article explains what belongs in a digital estate plan and how to start building one before your family ever needs it.
The LA Mayor Market Ends June 2. The Odds Are Moving Now.
Karen Bass is at 68%. Spencer Pratt at 27%. Over $21 million is already trading on the Los Angeles Mayor race on Kalshi — and the prices are shifting every day as local news breaks. The window to get in before the consensus hardens is closing. The best prediction market trades happen before everyone agrees on the outcome. That moment is right now, before June 2. Peer-to-peer, no house, cash out anytime. Trade $10, get $10 free to start.
Trade responsibly.
