Where Hashed Out Is Headed
Hey there Hashers!
If you've been reading Hashed Out for a while, you may have noticed that our focus is evolving.
When we launched, our goal was to explain the fundamentals of Web3—blockchain, cryptocurrencies, digital wallets, and the technologies shaping the next generation of the internet. Those topics remain important, but we've realized that the bigger story isn't about the technology itself. It's about how these innovations are changing everyday life.
Going forward, Hashed Out will continue to explore emerging technologies—including AI, digital identity, online ownership, cybersecurity, and Web3—but always through a practical, human lens. Rather than asking, "What's the latest technology?" we'll ask, "How will this affect the way we live, work, learn, travel, and connect?" We hope that approach makes every issue more useful, more approachable, and more relevant—whether you're simply curious about the future or looking to understand the forces quietly reshaping the digital world around us.
Issue Editorial
The Most Important Device You Own
If someone had asked twenty years ago what you would do if you lost your phone, the answer probably would have been simple: buy another one.
Today, losing your phone can mean losing access to your bank account, travel plans, photos, passwords, work, and even your ability to prove who you are online. Our smartphones have quietly become the remote controls for our digital lives.
This week, we're exploring why that matters—and the simple steps you can take today to make sure one lost device doesn't become a major disruption tomorrow.
Feature Story

Your smartphone has quietly become much more than a way to make calls or send messages. It stores your photos, manages your finances, unlocks your accounts, and increasingly serves as the key to your digital identity. But what would happen if it suddenly disappeared?
In this week's feature, we explore why losing your phone is about far more than replacing a device—and the simple steps you can take today to make your digital life more secure and resilient. Decentralized Science (DeSci) is revolutionizing research funding, transparency, and collaboration through blockchain and Web3 technologies.

Phone Security
☐ "Find My iPhone" or "Find My Device" is turned on.
☐ I know how to remotely lock or erase my phone.
☐ My phone automatically backs up to the cloud.
Passwords
☐ I use a password manager.
☐ I know my password manager's master password.
☐ I have stored any recovery codes somewhere safe.

☐ I know how to freeze my payment cards quickly.
☐ My bank has an alternative way to verify my identity.
☐ I know my bank's customer service number.
Photos & Memories
☐ My photos automatically back up.
☐ My important documents are stored somewhere besides my phone.
Family
☐ I know at least two important phone numbers from memory.
☐ Someone I trust knows how to reach me if I lose my device.
Your Goal
You don't need to check every box today. Admittedly, there are multiple boxes I couldn’t check.
Just improve one area each month. Building digital resilience is a process, not a one-time task.
Five-Minute Upgrade
This Week: Prepare for a Lost Phone
One small improvement today can prevent a major headache tomorrow.
Spend just five minutes completing these simple steps:
✓ Turn on "Find My Device"
Enable Apple's Find My or Android's Find My Device so you can locate, lock, or erase your phone if it's ever lost.
✓ Check Your Cloud Backup
Make sure your photos, contacts, and important files are backing up automatically.
✓ Verify Your Recovery Email
Confirm you can sign in to your primary email account from another device. Most account recovery begins there.
✓ Save Two Important Phone Numbers
Memorize—or write down—the numbers of two people you could call if you lost your phone.
✓ Learn Your Recovery Options
Take one minute to locate your phone manufacturer's instructions for finding or remotely wiping a lost device.
Why it matters: Digital resilience isn't built all at once. Small habits like these make it much easier to recover when something unexpected happens.
